Overview
Range Rover Velar is built on the aluminum iQ[Al] platform, which has already formed the basis of the Jaguar XE and XF passenger sedans, as well as the F-Pace crossover. The 2021 Range Rover Velar is its closest relative. The wheelbases are equal, 2.87 meters, but the Velar is longer – 4.8 meters. The trunk space is also almost identical – 673 liters. To lighten the weight the body of the SUV is made of “winged metal” and extended door handles are designed to improve aerodynamics. However, this is rather a tribute to fashion.
The five-seater interior has a stylish interior, also subordinate to the idea of minimalism. The low and heavily sloped front panel almost does not steal free space and abounds with touch screens. There are almost no classic buttons – all the functions of the menu, including climate control and Terrain Response are displayed on the touch screen and accompanied by beautiful graphics, and even pictures! This is all part of the new Touch Pro Duo multimedia system, which has two 10-inch screens. The lower is “stitched” into the center panel, and the upper looks more familiar and also can tilt forward for a better viewing angle. We should also add that even buttons on a steering wheel are touch-sensitive, and with inbuilt displays! Interestingly, the leather trim is basic, but the Brits also offer the expensive Danish fabric Kvadrat.
At the start of sales, and the acceptance of orders began immediately after the pre-show in early March, six power units are offered, two petrol and three diesel. The power of the last varies from 180 to 300 hp, and gasoline units develop 250 and 380 hp. The strongest for today Velar changes a first “hundred” for 5.3 seconds. The transmission can be only an eight-speed automatic ZF. With a drive they didn’t make a fuss and equipped Velar with all-wheel drive, the same as in F-Pace, realized with a multi-disk clutch. But Velar can brag of optional air suspension, capable to increase clearance up to 251 mm. Though even such an option will hardly be useful to owners of luxury SUVs.
